Jim Holley joined the Navy for a 4 year tour in 1964. After basic training and Gunners Mate Technician "A" school, he served aboard the USS Forrestal , USS Simon Lake, USS Emory S. Land, USS Puget Sound. He attended Navy instructor school in 1972 and taught several different skills to hundreds of Sailors, Marines, and Navy SEALS during the next 20 years. Jim was designated as a Master Training Specialist in 1983, an accomplishment he is very proud of. WTCS Jim Holley retired from the USN in 1992 after 28 years of service. After release from the Navy Jim headed for the Florida Keys aboard his sailboat "ODAAT".

Captain Jim Holley founded GrayStrokes as a SCUBA diving instruction and dive charter boat business in the Florida Keys. GrayStrokes specialized in teaching seniors and and persons with disabilities how to dive, and then take them diving with a level of personal service found no where else. His other draw was a 60 MPH dive boat. As a PADI instructor, Jim certified over 350 divers during his 6 years in the Keys. PADI Rescue Divers and Dive masters are required to be trained in CPR and First Aid, so Jim became certified as a CPR / First Aid instructor in 1993. Jim moved to eastern North Carolina in 2000, and began teaching CPR / First Aid with World Wide Marine Training in 2001.
